23 September 2021, 1400 -1600 BST
The plenary session will continue the discussions from last year’s symposium, but now focussing on the opportunities for manufacturing supply chains through the adoption of advanced manufacturing and digital technologies. As firms embrace industrial digital technologies (IDTs) and re-examine their approaches to their international footprint with greater emphasis than ever on supply security and sustainability, our focus shifts to new operating and business models that address productivity challenges and revenue growth. Drawing on more than 50 case studies conducted in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and research projects, we will be discussing emerging exemplar archetypes and transformation pathways. As firms transition between archetypes, we will demonstrate the IDTs involved, the leadership and governance models required, and suggest new metrics that go beyond the traditional return-on-investment. Related research findings aligned to the theme of new operating and business models enabled by industrial digital technologies will also be shared, setting out findings, future research and take-aways for industrial practitioners and policy makers. The session will include keynote industry speaker, Jason Berns of Ralph Lauren, who will address the implementation of industrial digital technologies in the textile-garment sector and share his thoughts on future business models that incorporate circularity as part of a net-zero sustainability agenda. The session will conclude with a short introduction to Day 2 Symposium themes, namely Circular Supply Chain Business Models, International Supply Challenges and Digitalisation of Supply Chains.
